FOUR PAWS embarks on Disaster Relief mission in Kenya

Following the initial emergency aid measures in the Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks, FOUR PAWS embarked on a full scale Disaster Relief mission in drought-struck Kenya. The team had been assembled from Europe and South Africa and started working in Maralal in the Samburu district. 30.000 animals – mostly cows, sheep and goats – were dewormed, provided with food, and received medical help with antibiotics and vitamins.

The situation in Samburu is on the brink of escalating. Conflicts among local communities, reports of increasing Malaria incidents and plundering gangs make the relief efforts particularly difficult. In addition, many families have started migrating with their cattle in order to get closer to the scarce water points. For some, this means walking for a week to seven days. FOUR PAWS has gathered information from members of government and farmers alike and got to work immediately after arriving in Nairobi on September 28. While tens of thousands of animals have already died of dehydration and diseases, the main problem is the extreme shortage of water – but also of medication: these are the crucial issues the FOUR PAWS has set out to fix.

Aid work under difficult circumstances
In the first week of the project the Disaster Relief team succeeded in de-worming, feeding and caring for 30.000 animals – a logistic challenge that is only rivaled by the building work that one of the units has taken up: trying to drill new boreholes and establish reliable water rills in the dried-out land. With many adversities to go against – from gasoline shortage to a near absent infrastructure – the FOUR PAWS team will continue its efforts to end the misery of the animals of Kenya. The country, which offers such a rich animal kingdom, is in immediate danger of perishing in a catastrophe widely unnoticed by the rest of the world.
